Apple Announces Devices Set to Lose Software Support in 2026

Apple has revealed a list of devices slated to cease receiving software updates in 2026, impacting a range of older iPhones and Apple Watches. While these devices won’t stop functioning entirely, users should be aware of reduced security and compatibility with newer applications.

Key Devices Affected

The list includes the iPhone 5s (2013), iPhone 6 (2014), Apple Watch Series 6 (2020), Apple Watch Series 7 (2021), Apple Watch Series 8 (2022), Apple Watch Ultra (1st generation, 2022), and Apple Watch SE (2nd generation, 2022). Notably, even devices running iOS 26 will continue to support iOS 27.

Continued Functionality, Reduced Security

Despite losing core software updates, these devices will continue to operate, though with a diminished level of security. Apple will continue to provide security updates to ensure compatibility with existing applications, such as FaceTime, iMessage, and device activation, extending their usability beyond the official end-of-life date. However, users are strongly advised against using these devices for online activities or handling sensitive personal data.

Siri AI Exclusivity

Looking ahead, only the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 series, iPhone 17 series, and iPhone 18 line will retain access to Siri AI functionality. This highlights Apple’s strategic focus on newer hardware platforms.

Important Note

While the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 received a security update in 2023, this was primarily to update software certificates, enabling continued functionality with applications like FaceTime and iMessage, slated to end in January 2027.
