Pokémon go data fuels secret military drone tech – but don’t panic
Rumors of the U.S. military secretly training drones using data harvested from Pokémon Go have swirled for weeks. Turns out, there’s a grain of truth to the speculation, though the reality is far more nuanced than a simple data grab.
A decade of scanning, a new purpose
Initially, players diligently scanned PokéStops within the game, earning Ultra Balls, Rare Candies, and other rewards. A staggering 30 billion scans – originating from various Niantic games – were generated, tracking individual video frames uploaded to the platform. This seemingly innocuous activity, once relegated to a voluntary side feature, has now been repurposed by a shadowy partnership.

Niantic, vantor: a tech alliance
The key players are Niantic Spatial, a spin-off company created by Niantic (the game’s developer), and Vantor, an intelligence firm with strong ties to the defense industry. Together, they’re developing a system capable of determining a sensor’s location even in areas where GPS signals are unavailable – a critical capability for remote-controlled robots like bomb disposal units and, crucially, drones.

Beyond the game: real-world mapping
Niantic Spatial’s work builds upon the massive dataset generated by Pokémon Go, leveraging those location scans to create incredibly detailed 3D models of the real world. This isn’t simply a digital copy of the game’s maps; it’s a foundational AI training set, allowing these models to recognize physical spaces with remarkable accuracy.
Scopely's role & data control
It’s important to note that, as of March 2025, Pokémon Go was sold to Scopely. Now, as part of that ownership structure, Niantic Spatial no longer shares this data with the military. A spokesperson confirmed that AR scans collected through Pokémon Go were voluntarily submitted and governed by existing Terms of Service and Privacy Policies, with the data sharing concluded as part of the transition to Scopely’s ownership.
The military's true aim
Vantor’s technology, in conjunction with Niantic Spatial’s mapping expertise, could revolutionize operations in challenging environments – from navigating through urban debris to deploying drones in areas with obstructed GPS signals. The potential applications extend beyond military use, with applications in ground-based robotics, such as delivery robots operating in dense cityscapes.
A quiet transformation
While the initial reports suggested a direct military data feed, Niantic insists that no such collaboration is occurring. However, the partnership with Vantor, announced last December, is very real and focuses on a “system capable of allowing a sensor to determine its position in the real world.” This technology, developed independently, will allow for real-time location sharing – a silent evolution driven by a game that captivated billions.
