T-Mobile Shifts Upgrade Policies, Cutting Yearly Perks
T-Mobile has revamped its mobile plan offerings, introducing new ‘Experience Beyond 2.0’ and ‘Experience More 2.0’ plans that significantly alter the traditional upgrade process. The changes, effective this week, effectively eliminate the previously offered yearly upgrade benefits, replacing them with a tiered ‘Early Upgrade’ option.
Goodbye Yearly Upgrades, Hello 18-Month Device Payoff
Previously, T-Mobile’s ‘Forever Price Guarantee’ and tax-inclusive pricing were key differentiators, driving substantial growth. However, these strategies have been abandoned. Now, to qualify for an upgrade, customers must pay off 50% of their device’s cost – a requirement that now takes 18 months due to extended financing agreements spanning 36 months.

A Double-Edged Sword: Longer Contracts, Lower Monthly Payments
While a 36-month contract might initially appear as a tactic to lock in subscribers, it also translates to smaller monthly payments, a potentially appealing factor considering rising smartphone costs. However, paying off the device early forfeits any accumulated bill credits.

Competition Remains, But Perks are Diminishing
Despite these changes, T-Mobile remains the only major carrier offering built-in upgrades as a standard plan benefit. While competitors like AT&T offer add-ons for early upgrades (at an additional monthly cost), T-Mobile’s approach is now more restrictive. Recent changes, including the retirement of tax-inclusive plans and the removal of customers from older plans, further highlight a shift towards more conservative upgrade terms. Rising smartphone prices, exemplified by increases in foldable devices and anticipated iPhone models, are contributing to this trend, with T-Mobile reportedly reducing subsidies to offset these hikes.
Recent Developments & Cost Savings
T-Mobile recently barred existing accounts from two offers, and a six-month unlimited plan is now 57% off, dropping from $210 to $90. Mint Mobile is also offering discounted plans for 3, 6, or 12 months at $15/month.
