Verizon inches ahead in wireless network quality

A recent spate of reports from RootMetrics and JD Power has crowned Verizon the top dog in wireless network quality, albeit by a hair's breadth. The latest findings from JD Power's 2026 U.S. Wireless Network Quality Performance Study reveal a narrowing gap between the Big Three carriers, with Verizon eking out a slight lead.

Verizon's network dominance

According to the study, Verizon outpaced AT&T and T-Mobile in performance during the first half of 2026. This marks a significant turnaround for the carrier, which had previously struggled to keep pace with its rivals. Verizon's victory is particularly notable in regions like the Mid-Atlantic, North Central, and Southeast, where it posted the lowest problem rates per 100 interactions (PP100) at just 6.

T-Mobile, once the 5G darling, has seen its edge narrow. While it still tied with Verizon in the Northeast and West, it trailed in the Southwest and overall. AT&T managed to tie Verizon for second place in two regions.

The data suggests a welcome trend of improving network quality across the board. Problem counts have plummeted to a record low of just 8 issues per 100 interactions nationwide. However, this achievement may be partly attributed to a significant decline in device usage, with customers using their gadgets for an average of 16 fewer minutes over a 48-hour period compared to last year.

As for what drives carrier choice, a quarter of respondents still prioritize price, while nearly 40 percent opt for networks based on quality and reputation.

While Verizon's victory is a coup, the competition remains fierce. T-Mobile will need to find a new differentiator, as it's no longer the cheapest or the fastest. The future of wireless networks is more competitive than ever.
