Mario mania sends amc stock soaring after record-breaking debut

AMC Entertainment shares jumped a remarkable 13% on Monday, fueled by a box office surge ignited by the phenomenal success of Super Mario Bros. Movie. The weekend’s performance is a much-needed shot in the arm for the struggling cinema chain, which had seen its stock plummet nearly 28% year-to-date before the celebratory rally.

The animated adventure, a collaboration between Illumination and Nintendo, has shattered records worldwide, raking in an astonishing $372.4 million in its opening weekend. But the film’s impact in Spain was particularly striking – it became the highest-grossing film of the year and the best-ever debut for a Universal Pictures release, netting €9.56 million and drawing 1.29 million spectators since its release on Wednesday, April 1st. The film captured a commanding 52.39% of the Spanishmarket share.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie isn’t a standalone success; it builds upon the foundation laid by 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which already amassed over $1.3 billion globally. Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo are the driving forces behind the franchise, co-financing the latest installment with Universal Pictures, who also handle worldwide distribution. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return as directors, with a script by Matthew Fogel and a score by Brian Tyler.

But there's more to AMC's recent gains than just Mario. The company also benefited from the debut of The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, and the ongoing popularity of Project Hail Mary and Hoppers, contributing to a more diverse and appealing slate for moviegoers.

“We have consistently maintained that theatrical exhibition is most effective when there is an attractive and diverse slate of films for audiences to enjoy,” stated AMC CEO Adam Aron in a Bloomberg report. The numbers don't lie – a vibrant box office is the lifeblood of AMC, and Mario has undeniably delivered a much-needed infusion of capital.
