Spain kicks off Holy
Week with processions across the country, and RTVE is offering unprecedented access to the cultural and religious events. From Palm Sunday through Easter, viewers can tune in to a dedicated channel and expanded programming across RTVE’s digital platforms.
Rtve launches dedicated holy week channel
RTVE Play has launched RTVE Procesiones, a linear channel broadcasting events from across Spain and the Vatican, available until April 6th. The channel features live coverage of significant processions, including the Veracruz and Santo Sepulcro processions in Palencia, and the Holy Thursday and Good Friday processions in Mérida. Other highlights include the Santo Encuentro in Burgos, the Procession of Silence and Charity in Medina del Campo, and the Desembarco de la Legión and Procession of the Calvario in Málaga.
Beyond RTVE Procesiones, RTVE’s TDT channels – La 1 and La 2 – have a special program schedule. Expect films and children's content. A nostalgic return of a beloved 80s program will also feature. Expect coverage of events like the Cristo de Mena procession by the Legion in Málaga and the Good Friday procession in Seville.
Regional news broadcasts will highlight local traditions like the Empalaos of Extremadura, the Tamborradas of Hellín, and the Rompida de la hora in Calanda. Classic films will also be shown, with La 1 featuring 'The Ten Commandments' on Holy Thursday and 'Ben-Hur' and 'Pompeii' on Good Friday. La 2 will offer 'The Sacred Tunic' on Friday evening.
For younger viewers, Clan’s Disney block will expand with extra episodes and adventures throughout the day. Family-friendly movies like Shrek, Hotel Transylvania, and SpongeBob will also be shown.
RTVE Procesiones is accessible via the RTVE Play website and apps for mobile and TV. This comprehensive coverage ensures that Holy Week celebrations, encompassing both religious observance and cultural tradition, are accessible to a wide audience.
