A cosmic laser 8 billion light-years away just lit up earth’s radio dishes
The brightest and most distant space maser ever recorded has fired a microwave beacon straight at South Africa’s MeerKAT array. The signal—an 18-centimetre whisper stretched into a roar by Einstein’s warped spacetime—originated when the universe was barely half its current age, making it a snapshot of galaxy carnage frozen in deep time.
The hydroxyl beacon no one saw coming
Hydroxyl masers are already rare; you need colliding galaxies, dense molecular clouds and a perfect line of sight. This one, catalogued as HATLAS J142935.3–002836, checks every box and then breaks the scale. Its brightness hints at “gigamaser” territory, a category so extreme it lives more in theoretical memos than in observation logs. The numbers are rude: the microwave amplification outshines typical galactic masers by orders of magnitude, as if someone cranked a flashlight into a military searchlight.
Gravitational lensing did the heavy lifting. A foreground elliptical smeared the maser’s photons into an Einstein ring, magnifying the signal just enough for MeerKAT’s 64 dishes to catch it. Without that intervening mass, the photons would have drowned in cosmic static. It’s the astronomical equivalent of using a stranger’s glasses to read fine print from across a football field.

Meerkat’s jackpot and the scramble ahead
The discovery team isn’t stopping at one trophy. They’re combing through MeerKAT’s public archive for similar lensed masers, betting that hundreds—maybe thousands—are hiding in plain sight, waiting for the right algorithm and a bit of lensed luck. Each new detection stitches another pixel into the time-lapse movie of how galaxies bulk up through violent mergers.
Expect follow-up spectra from the VLA and ALMA within months. The goal: map the kinematics of these hydroxyl clouds and measure how fast galaxies cannibalise each other when the cosmos was in its adolescent growth spurt. If the current rate holds, today’s record-holder will look quaint by winter.
For now, HATLAS J142935.3–002836 holds the crown: a single, searing maser line that has crossed eight billion years of expanding space just to ring MeerKAT’s dinner bell. The universe rarely phones home; when it does, it uses a number we didn’t even know was in the directory.
