A rocky super-earth just 10 light-years away checks every box for life
Ten light-years is nothing on the cosmic invoice, yet close enough to make us greedy. Astronomers have now locked down GJ 887 d: six Earth masses, a 51-day year, and an orbit parked inside the comfort zone of a quiet red dwarf. Translation—liquid water could survive on its surface, if the planet managed to cling to an atmosphere.
The star that doesn't throw tantrums
Red dwarfs are famous for UV flares that strip planets naked. Gliese 887, however, barely belches. A decade of chromospheric monitoring shows activity levels half that of Proxima Centauri, giving any atmosphere on GJ 887 d a fighting chance. Combine stellar calm with a stately distance of 10.7 light-years and you get the nearest potentially habitable world that isn't orbiting a flare monster.
The confirmation comes from 230 radial-velocity pulls recorded by ESO's HARPS and ESPRESSO spectrographs. The instruments caught the star wobbling at 1.4 m s⁻¹—roughly the jogging speed of a toddler—repeating every 51 Earth days. Noise from starspots and magnetic churn was modelled out using Gaussian-process regression, the same trick that keeps exoplanet hunters sane when stars misbehave.

Gravity you could learn to live with
At six Earth masses the surface gravity clocks in around 1.8 g. Awkward, yes, but not crushing. Think airline pilot centrifuge, not pancake. More pressing is the unknown: Does the planet hold volatiles, or did the dwarf's early tantrums blow them away before the star settled into middle age? The answer is written in infrared light that the James Webb Space Telescope could already be collecting during discretionary time.
Transmission spectroscopy will hunt for CO₂, H₂O and the sweet whisper of O₂. A thick CO₂ blanket would nudge the surface temperature above freezing even for a star that delivers only 40 % of the Sun's Earth-orbit irradiance. Find water vapour and we have a greenhouse; find none and GJ 887 d becomes just another lava-slathered rock.

Why this matters right now
Mars colonisation plans keep slipping to the right on every Gantt chart. Meanwhile, the census of close, life-friendly real estate is exploding. Each new neighbour tightens the statistics: if two habitable-zone planets exist within 10 light-years, the galaxy could be teeming with temperate worlds. The closer they are, the cheaper the follow-up.
No probe will reach GJ 887 d this century—laser sails or not—but characterising its air is a 2030s problem, not a 2300s one. First light on the ELT's high-resolution spectrograph, ANDES, is booked for 2028. If oxygen shows up in that data, the philosophical shockwave hits before humanity has planted its first flag on Mars. The universe, it turns out, stocked the cosmic neighbourhood before we even finished checking the local inventory.
