The payoff: limbs caught halfway between the grasping arms of early cousins and the stunted stumps sported by later species. Instead of a smooth shrinkage, evolution performed a U-turn—maintaining length while rewiring muscle attachments for a yet-unknown task.

The skull adds another twist. Tooth serrations vary row by row, a pattern seen today in omnivorous lizards. If Haolong dongi dined on seeds as well as carrion, the entire dietary narrative for its branch—until now stamped “strictly carnivore”—needs redrafting.
