Astronaut Christina Koch relayed the situation to Mission Control: “The toilet has gone offline and I have a flashing amber caution light.” While the challenges of space travel are well-documented—the physiological stresses, the isolation—the mundane realities of waste disposal often get overlooked. Forget calling a plumber; at 300,000 miles from Earth, repairs are a decidedly more complex proposition.

Orion’s lavatory is a titanium marvel, an evolved version of the system used on the International Space Station (ISS).
