NASA just caught a 4-billion-year-old riverbed hiding under the dust of Jezero crater. The radar trace flickered for three seconds, but that blip rewrites the Martian clock: water flowed, vanished, returned, vanished again—long before Earth had even invented bacteria.

The geometry screams “fluvial,” yet the layers sit 300 m above the crater floor, meaning the river kept carving after Jezero first filled with lava. In plain English: the water cycle outlived the volcano.

Timing is the dagger. Radiation counts on adjacent boulders pin the flow at 3.7–4.2 Ga, a window when Mars still had a magnetic field and Earth’s surface was molten. If life ever gained a toehold here, it had a half-billion-year head start on us.

Think burst pipes in a Martian winter: meltwater races, freezes, melts again. Every thaw delivered fresh nutrients, fresh erosion, fresh chances for chemistry to inch toward biology.

Organic hunters are salivating. On Earth, Precambrian microfossils cling to exactly these buried point-bar sands. SHERLOC, the rover’s UV Raman spectrometer, has already flagged aromatic compounds a few hundred metres west; the new corridor gives it a roadmap. One core, one sleeve, one ride home on the 2031 sample-return lander—then we’ll know if Martian life beat Earth’s to the starting gun.

The kicker: the same radargrams show fresh, unfilled voids beneath the paleo-channels. Cavernous porosity. If future colonists want liquid water without drilling kilometres of ice, they might just pump it from these fossil aquifers. Buried rivers could irrigate tomato farms under red-greenhouses, their roots sipping the same water that once carried Martian microbes.

NASA will not confirm life today. But it just handed us the map, the clock and the watering can. Dig in.
