While the Toronto cohort wrapped up, voice-ai startups fed 30-second voice clips to deep nets. Accuracy for incipient Alzheimer’s: 78.5 %—without a needle, without radiation, without a $4,000 scan. The algorithms don’t parse vocabulary; they time micro-pauses, jitter, and spectral slope. One startup, Winterlight Labs, spun out of the same Toronto department and already screens retirement communities across Canada.

Longitudinal proof is still missing. Today’s slow talkers may never progress to clinical dementia. But the risk curve steepens after 60, and speech is the cheapest longitudinal sensor we own. Phones record; clouds timestamp; consent is a checkbox.

The stigma question looms. Tell users their voice flags future decline and they may choke on their own data. Hide the score and the signal goes wasted. Meltzer’s compromise: give clinicians the dashboard, let them decide when the patient is ready to hear the tempo.

Bottom line: forget tip-of-the-tongue bloopers. What matters is the milliseconds between syllables. Your voice is a biomarker you upload daily. One day soon, the same app that books your dinner table may ping you with a calendar invite—for an earlier dinner, and a memory clinic, before you ever forget the word for fork.
