Instagram is slipping a paid tier into the app that made ‘free’ feel eternal. A pilot called Instagram Plus is already live for a slice of users in Mexico, the Philippines and Japan, charging the equivalent of €1–2 a month for tools that turn the etiquette of Stories upside down: watch without leaving footprints, see who rewatched your own clip, and keep a Story alive for 48 hours instead of the canonical 24.
The experiment, confirmed to TechCrunch by Meta, marks the first time the platform dangles premium consumer features rather than business badges. Translation: the same company that once swore the app would stay free is now metering ghost mode.
What you actually get for those two euros
Subscribers can build unlimited broadcast lists, effectively micro-segmenting who glimpses each fleeting post. They also unlock a search bar inside other people’s viewer lists—no more thumb-scrolling to confirm if an ex saw last night’s selfie. A once-a-week “Story boost” pushes a single post into a second day of visibility, a lever influencers will weaponize before product drops.
The feature set smells like dating-app logic: animated SuperLike reactions appear atop Stories, gamifying the thumb tap into a micro-transaction of attention.
Why now and why you should care
Meta’s revenue engine is wheezing. Apple’s ATT privacy clamp sliced ad-targeting precision, while TikTok keeps siphoning Gen-Z minutes. The result: every Meta app must mint fresh cash or face the corporate guillotine. WhatsApp already sells business APIs; Facebook is trialing paid groups. Instagram, the pretty sibling, was last in line—until this week.
The pricing is psychological loose change, but the message is macro: if the pilot converts, expect a global rollout before the next ad-revenue dip. Free Social Media is becoming a funnel toward a metered layer where the most obsessive behaviors—stalking, flexing, rewinding—carry a price tag.
