Whatsapp finally rolls out username support after years of delay

After years of anticipation, WhatsApp is finally rolling out username support, allowing users to share unique identifiers instead of their phone numbers.

First spotted in beta builds as far back as 2023, the feature has been in development for some time. Meta aimed to ensure the new username experience was stable, secure, and compatible with other WhatsApp features.

Users can expect certain restrictions when creating their usernames, including a minimum length of three characters, a maximum of 30 characters, and a ban on certain special characters like dots and hyphens. The username cannot start or end with a period, nor can it resemble a domain name.

Once usernames are live, people will be able to share them when exchanging contact details, providing a more private and modern alternative to phone numbers.

Interestingly, WhatsApp will also allow users to leverage their Facebook or Instagram usernames on the messaging platform, further enhancing the seamless experience.

While the exact timeline for the global rollout remains unclear, early adopters can check if the feature has been enabled on their devices by navigating to Settings and looking for the dedicated Username section.
