6G on the horizon: ntia maps out spectrum for next-gen wireless

As the world is still absorbing the speed and capabilities of 5G, the talk has already shifted to 6G, the next generation of wireless connectivity. While it may seem premature, organizations are already working on preparing the necessary spectrum for 6G's arrival, expected in 2030. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is at the forefront of this effort.

Spectrum planning underway for 6g

The NTIA has launched a new website to track the progress of spectrum analysis for various frequency bands being considered for 6G use. The 7GHz band currently leads the pack, with tasks eight and nine still to complete spectrum interference analysis. Other bands in the running include 4.4GHz, 2.7GHz, and 1.6GHz.

NTIA Chief Administrator Arielle Roth emphasized the importance of spectrum efficiency, stating that reconfiguring and modernizing spectrum usage can make more room for wireless operations. She also discussed the Spectrum Relocation Fund, which requires detailed pipeline plans and Congressional approval to unlock funds for studies on the 2.7GHz and 4GHz bands.
