It’s a pattern – Technology sprinting ahead while institutions lag – and it’s a problem rapidly escalating beyond academic circles and into the core of global infrastructure.

Isaac Asimov, back in 1988, pointed out that science acquires knowledge faster than society acquires wisdom. Forty years later, that observation feels less like a prophecy and more like a stark assessment of our current predicament with artificial intelligence. We’re building increasingly sophisticated systems, capable of reasoning, generating code, analyzing documents, and making decisions with minimal human intervention, and frankly, we're not keeping pace with the ethical and societal implications.
Consider the rise of autonomous agents. These systems, capable of executing complex tasks independently, are being embraced by companies across sectors. But behind this efficiency surge lies a colossal energy footprint. Training a model like Gemini or ChatGPT can consume the equivalent of an entire year's electricity usage for hundreds of homes – a statistic that's already triggering debate within European energy policy circles. Tech giants tout sustainability commitments, yet continue to establish facilities in regions where power is cheap, and often, far from renewable sources.
Europe’s AI Act represents a significant, albeit geographically limited, attempt to address this disparity. Classifying systems by risk level, mandating documentation and audits, and prohibiting specific unacceptable uses, it's a framework designed to force accountability. But outside of Europe, the regulatory landscape is fragmented. The United States relies on sector-specific rules – healthcare, finance, defense – lacking a cohesive overarching law. Many other nations offer only non-binding guidelines, essentially amounting to suggestions.
The consequence? A single AI system can operate with virtually no restrictions in one market and be deemed high-risk in the next. This inconsistency highlights a fundamental flaw in our approach: we are allowing the Technology to dictate the rules, rather than the other way around.

Beyond regulation: a need for holistic oversight
The debate in 2026 won’t be about halting AI’s advancement – that's a futile proposition. The real challenge lies in building, with equal velocity, the mechanisms to manage it. This requires a profound shift in who sits at the decision-making table. We need jurists, ethicists, and representatives from civil society alongside the engineers and data scientists. Independent audits – not optional recommendations – must become a prerequisite for market access. And digital literacy needs to be elevated to the same status as financial or health education; a basic competency for navigating this increasingly complex world.
The rapid development of AI isn’t an inevitable march toward some dystopian future. It's a challenge, yes, but also an opportunity. An opportunity to build a more equitable, transparent, and responsible technological ecosystem. Asimov didn't advocate for scientific stagnation; he urged society to match the pace of its own creations. The question isn't whether we can build these powerful tools, but whether we possess the collective wisdom to wield them responsibly. The energy bills alone should be a wake-up call.
