The illusion of comprehension is now monetized
Customer-service scripts save Delta Air Lines 50 million USD a year, BuzzFeed pumps out AI travel guides that juice click-throughs, and venture capitalists trade term sheets on the myth that scale equals sentience. Meanwhile, a toddler asking “Why is the sky blue?” still crashes most language models because why is a metaphysical land mine, not a statistical gap.

It described “a person manipulating a metallic tool, likely for electronics repair.” Correct, but hollow—no memory of burnt fingers, no smell of rosin, no childhood thrill of taking apart a broken radio while parents argued in the next room. Strip the training captions and the machine is blind again.

Medical miracles still hit the same wall
At MIT's CSAIL lab, researchers use diffusion models to flag early Alzheimer's in MRIs with 94 % sensitivity, a figure human radiologists envy. Yet when the dataset shifts to a South African clinic with older scanners, accuracy plummets to 67 %. The software never notices; it has no stake in the forgotten names or the vanished recipes of the patients it misreads.
Politicians draft AI rights bills, chatbot companions sell intimacy by the minute, and philosophers dust off panpsychism to argue that enough complexity might conjure awareness. But a parlor trick repeated at zillion-parameter scale remains a parlor trick. The lights are on, nobody's home, and the electricity bill is climbing.
Descartes won the argument simply by dying before the jargon of “emergence” could fog the debate.
