Cybersecurity, once a specialist's concern, has become a mainstream anxiety, and the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence is dramatically lowering the barrier to entry for malicious actors. According to Santiago Izquierdo, Head of Technology at Samsung Iberia, and Melchor Sanz, CTO of HP Iberia, protecting yourself is surprisingly straightforward—but ignoring the escalating risks is simply not an option.

It's the unsettling ease with which AI can now mimic individuals. “It’s become relatively simple to use AI to impersonate someone,” he stated bluntly. This isn’t some far-off science fiction scenario; it's a present-day reality where deepfakes and synthetic voices can convincingly replicate anyone, opening the door to devastating fraud and reputational damage.

Of course, the familiar threats persist. Phishing emails still laden with malware remain a potent vector, as do unsecured Wi-Fi networks – often overlooked by users. Consider this: Target is already employing AI agents to handle shopping tasks. When those agents stumble, the financial burden falls squarely on the consumer. But the impersonation threat is something entirely new, a layer of complexity that demands a shifted mindset.

Samsung is actively addressing this evolving landscape with a new alert system. It monitors app permissions, flagging potential misuse and notifying users before data is compromised. HP, meanwhile, has implemented tools to detect whether a video or audio clip has been artificially generated, offering a crucial, albeit imperfect, defense against manipulated media. But even these sophisticated protections aren’t foolproof.

Izquierdo highlights a glaring vulnerability: the widespread neglect of Samsung’s Secure Wi-Fi feature. “I don’t understand why so few people have it enabled,” he remarked in an interview with COPE. This seemingly minor setting provides crucial encryption when connecting to public networks—airports, universities, coffee shops—effectively shielding data from interception. It’s a basic safeguard, yet its underutilization is astonishing.

Beyond Wi-Fi, Sanz emphasizes the importance of enabling Secure Boot, another underused feature that prevents unauthorized access to the hard drive on another computer. Coupled with full disk encryption and a robust antivirus solution – even Microsoft Defender, he insists – a user can significantly bolster their defenses. “Not installing an antivirus today is, frankly, courting disaster,” Sanz stated.

The landscape has shifted. Blind trust is no longer an option. The zero-trust philosophy – verifying everything, trusting nothing – has become the most effective approach to mitigating cyberattacks and online scams. It's a mindset of perpetual skepticism, a recognition that the digital world is inherently adversarial. The days of passively accepting security prompts are long gone.
