Apple may downgrade iphone 18 display and chip to keep prices steady

Apple is reportedly planning significant downgrades to the base iPhone 18 model in an effort to keep prices unchanged amid rising component costs. According to a new leak from Weibo's Fixed Focus Digital, the vanilla iPhone 18 could feature a lower-quality display and downgraded chipset compared to its predecessor.

A step back in display manufacturing

The exact specifications of the downgraded display remain unclear, but it's likely that the iPhone 18 will have reduced brightness compared to the iPhone 17. Last year's base model boasted a 6.3-inch ProMotion display with up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness.

Chip downgrade in disguise?

Fixed Focus Digital also suggested that Apple may downgrade the A-series chip powering the iPhone 18, possibly adopting the same naming convention as the iPhone 17 and 17e. These handsets both feature variants of the A19 chip, with the iPhone 17 sporting a five-core GPU and the iPhone 17e making do with a four-core GPU.

These rumored downgrades aim to offset the rising costs of components, ensuring the iPhone 18 maintains the same price point as last year's model. The strategy seems to be focused on the budget-conscious segment, as users tend to prioritize affordability over raw performance.
