Apple's foldable iphone sparks a race: huawei prepares counter

The foldable phone market is heating up. While Apple is gearing up to release its long-awaited foldable iPhone later this year, a new report suggests Huawei is planning a direct response – not just one, but two new Pura models, including a wide-folding device mirroring Apple's design.

Huawei eyes foldable competition with pura x successor

Reports indicate Huawei isn't content with simply releasing a Pura X2. Instead, the Chinese giant is reportedly developing a foldable phone designed to compete directly with Apple's upcoming device. This is a strategic move, given the success – and inevitable attention – Apple's entry into the foldables market has garnered.

The foldable iPhone, rumored to unfold horizontally like an iPad, is expected to launch alongside or shortly after the iPhone 15 Pro models. This contrasts with the Huawei Pura X, a wider foldable designed for vertical unfolding. While details on hardware upgrades for the Pura X2 are scarce, Huawei has teased vibrant color options like orange and purple, a stark contrast to the expected black and white for Apple's initial offering.

This isn’t the first instance of a manufacturer mimicking Apple’s design. Samsung is also working on a Galaxy Z Wide Fold, timed to coincide with the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Both companies recognize the potential of the foldable form factor and are eager to establish a foothold before Apple solidifies its position.

The foldable phone market has matured significantly. Early iterations were hampered by price and durability concerns, particularly the visible display creases. Devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, Honor Magic V6, and Oppo Find N6 have demonstrated considerable progress. Samsung’s advancements in crease-free displays could be a significant factor in the Fold 8 and Wide Fold.

Huawei's dual-pronged approach – a Pura X successor and a foldable mirroring the iPhone – suggests a calculated gamble. They're betting that the demand for wide-folding devices will surge, and they're positioning themselves to capitalize on that growth. The race to dominate the foldable market is intensifying, and the next few months will reveal which strategy prevails.
