Tobias Niederwieser, a professor at BioServe Space Technologies, detailed a four-stage process to The New York Times, involving hardware presentation, risk assessment, mitigation planning, and rigorous testing. The approval process alone highlights the complexity of introducing even seemingly benign devices into the unforgiving space environment.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max itself is shielded by Ceramic Shield 2 on both front and back—a material Apple boasts is tougher than any other smartphone glass or ceramic. Yet, crucial to note, the devices are stripped of their connectivity. No internet access, no Bluetooth—just a high-resolution camera and a durable shell.
Footage circulating on X, captured during the live NASA broadcast, shows an astronaut receiving the phone and stowing it in a compartment on their flight suit before launch. Another video, taken in zero gravity, depicts the crew passing the gleaming silver iPhone 17 Pro Max around—a brief but compelling glimpse of everyday tech in an extraordinary setting. They also have access to two Nikon D5 cameras and four GoPro Hero 11 units, ensuring diverse photographic capabilities.
What’s striking is Apple’s complete lack of involvement in the approval process.
