OpenAI is quietly overhauling ChatGPT, focusing on features that will transform it from a clever chatbot into a genuinely useful productivity tool. Forget endless scrolling through conversations – the upcoming updates promise a streamlined experience for managing files, interacting with images, and generally taming the conversational chaos.
A new era of file sharing
The current sharing process in ChatGPT is clunky, relying on the system's default share sheet. That’s about to change. OpenAI is introducing a dedicated in-app sharing sheet, allowing users to directly send links to popular platforms like Gmail, Outlook, Signal, Snapchat, and WhatsApp. For services not listed, the system share sheet remains available. But the immediate impact will be the seamless integration with commonly used communication tools – a welcome relief for those who routinely share ChatGPT outputs.
But there’s more. Users will soon have access to an “Uploaded Files” section, essentially a centralized repository for every file previously attached to a conversation. This is a game-changer for professionals relying on ChatGPT for document analysis, image processing, or any task involving substantial file uploads. Imagine the frustration of sifting through lengthy chats to locate that critical image – that problem is about to vanish.
Image editing: beyond the basics
The addition of image editing capabilities is perhaps the most intriguing development. When attaching a photo, users will gain three new options: “Clean Image,” “Remove Background,” and “Draw/Annotate.” The draw/annotate feature is already live, but the other two are currently under development. The beauty of this integration is the automation—selecting any of these options will automatically add the corresponding command to the ChatGPT prompt, streamlining the workflow.
The new file selector is another significant improvement. Instead of opening the system's file explorer each time, users will now be presented with a built-in selector displaying the 30 most recently uploaded files, plus a button to access the full system selector. This seemingly minor change dramatically reduces friction and speeds up the attachment process.
While OpenAI hasn't announced a firm release date, these updates signal a clear shift towards making ChatGPT a more practical and integrated tool.
