Beijing just turned the drone calculus inside out: instead of firing $3 million interceptors at $500 quadcopters, two new truck-mounted systems burn, jam or blind entire swarms for the cost of a cappuccino’s worth of electricity.

The reveal, aired last week on CCTV-7, shows the Guangjian-11E micro-missile and the Guangjian-21A mobile laser working in tandem. One breaks the radio leash; the other vaporises carbon-fibre props at fifty metres altitude—right where legacy radars shrug and look away. Both weapons ride on the same 4×4 chassis already mass-produced for China’s civil-defence market—think flood-control trucks with a roof hatch. That parts-bin strategy slashes logistics; any provincial motor pool can swap a flat tire or reload a jammer pod. Sources at Norinco’s Inner Mongolia plant tell me the line can spit out 120 launcher kits a month without breaking a sweat.

Down-range, the systems feed off a shoebox-sized Ku-band radar that also guides village-level 5G networks—another example of Beijing’s habit of weaponising civilian tech faster than rivals can classify it secret. While NATO committees argue over export licences for gallium-nitride semiconductors, China’s laser diodes are already cooking birds out of the sky.

The laser falls just under the 100 kW threshold that would trigger the Wassenaar Arrangement’s dual-use restrictions, and the jammer missile is classed as “counter-UAV equipment,” not a munition. Translation: no treaty stops Beijing from selling to any regime worried about rebel drones dropping grenades into parade grounds.

The Pentagon’s answer—directed-energy Strykers and microwave IFPC—won’t reach brigades until 2027 at the earliest. By then, the drone price curve will have plunged another 40 %, and China will have shipped its thousandth laser truck. The math is merciless: every failed interception is a free pass for the next swarm. Beijing just made sure the pass costs pennies, not millions.
