Inside, PLA engineers demonstrated what they call a “heterogeneous pack”: four-legged ground units that talk to each other, swap targets and auto-assign firing sectors, all while a single grunt with a voice glove or rifle-mounted toggle keeps the loop inside NATO’s 2-second decision window. Confirmation-to-kill still requires a human thumb, but target acquisition, path planning and munition selection are handled by an edge-compute stack the size of a shoebox.

The dogs carry either QLB-06 35 mm grenade launchers or 5.8 mm squad automatic weapons. Footage shows them bounding over toppled taxis, climbing stairwells and synchronising barrel sweep angles so crossfire never overlaps—behaviour tree scripting that western labs have only simulated in ROS Gazebo environments.

The Atlas air wing adds a vertical dimension. 96 ducted-fan drones split into three cohorts: scouts running 4K gimbals, jammers blasting 20 W in S-band, and kamikaze strikers packing 1 kg shaped charges. A 65 km/h L30 high-speed catamaran ferries the whole kit to within 556 km of any coastline, turning riverine slums or island districts into pre-configured kill boxes.

Boston Dynamics’ Spot and Ghost Robotics’ Vision-60 can trot around military bases, but export rules and boardroom ethics keep them disarmed. No U.S. firm has publicised live-fire coordination between ground quadrupeds and air swarms at this density. The closest analogue, the U.S. Marine Corps’ Loitering Munition Swarm trials, still treats dogs as sensor mules, not weapons platforms.

China’s message is loud because the channel was official. CCTV’s primetime slot guarantees the footage reaches domestic audiences—nationalism engineering—and foreign military attachés—deterrence engineering—at once. No leaks, no ambiguity: the PLA has operationalised autonomous urban warfare and wants credit now.

Cost curve? The documentary flaunts a production line in Shenzhen where robotic chassis roll off the same conveyor that once assembled consumer drones. Unit price is rumoured under$12,000, cheaper than a single Javelin missile. At that price you don’t need a superpower budget; you need a procurement account and a shipping container.

Tomorrow’s city fight will not be door-to-door. It will be algorithm-to-algorithm, with flesh-and-blood soldiers reduced to fail-safe switches. The first army that accepts this calculus wins the next block. Everyone else becomes the block’s debris.
