One in three phones sold worldwide this January carries a 6,000 mAh cell or larger, and none of them wear an Apple or Samsung logo. Counterpoint’s fresh tally shows the global average battery has swollen to 5,291 mAh—up 400 mAh in twelve months, the sharpest annual jump since late 2021—while the iPhone 17 Pro Max and Galaxy S26 Ultra still hover at 4,823 mAh and 5,000 mAh respectively.

The secret is chemistry, not sheer size. Xiaomi, Honor and OnePlus have quietly switched to silicon-carbon anodes that pack 10 % more energy into the same millimetre of thickness. Lithium-ion, the formula Apple and Samsung still trust, simply can’t stretch that far without bulking up the chassis or breaching thermal limits set by regulators in Europe and North America.

Honor’s X70 5G tops the January sales chart among super-tankers: 8,300 mAh inside a body only 8.6 mm thick. Xiaomi’s Redmi 15C 4G follows with 6,000 mAh at half the price of a flagship. Both devices launched exclusively in China, India and Southeast Asia—markets where certification bodies allow denser cells and consumers treat battery life as a non-negotiable.

Apple and Samsung are not short of know-how. Cupertino holds dozens of silicon-anode patents filed since 2019, and Samsung SDI already mass-produces silicon-carbon packs for electric scooters. The hesitation is risk calculus: silicon swells during charge cycles, and after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco Samsung’s legal teams vet every extra milliampere twice. Apple, meanwhile, prefers to amortise new materials across its Mac and iPad lines before risking a million-unit iPhone recall.

Supply chain sources tell TechBloom that Samsung’s Galaxy S27 Ultra—expected next February—will finally ship with a stacked 6,200 mAh silicon-carbon pack, paired with a vapour chamber twice the width of this year’s model. Apple’s first testbed will be the rumoured iPhone Fold, whose two-cell layout leaves more room for expansion, but that device is at least eighteen months out.

Until then, every month of delay costs market share. Counterpoint notes that 29 % of January buyers picked a 6,000 mAh-plus phone, up from 10 % a year earlier. The curve is exponential, and it points east.

Bottom line: the battery arms race is over for now, and the trophy sits in Shenzhen, not Cupertino or Suwon.
