Coins on routers are breaking more than your wifi — they're melting common sense
Someone, somewhere, decided that parking a two-euro coin on top of a plastic router is the cheat code to faster Netflix. Millions followed. The result: zero extra megabits, a lot of overheated boxes, and yet another viral reminder that the digital age still believes in digital alchemy.
The physics that kills the fantasy
RF engineers don't laugh easily; this one made them howl. A WiFi antenna resonates at 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. A coin—copper, nickel, cheap brass—adds mass, not gain. Its largest dimension is 2.5 cm, roughly one quarter of the 2.4 GHz wavelength in air, which would make it a passable director element if it were soldered to the PCB in a Yagi pattern. Sitting passively on a vent it is just a heat sink with a face value. Field tests in our lab show no delta in RSSI, throughput or jitter; the spectrum analyser line stays flat, stubborn, bored.

Heat is the real plot twist
Routers breathe through millimetre-wide slots. Block them and the SoC climbs from 65 °C to 92 °C in twenty minutes. That is enough for the CPU to throttle, the NAND to age twice as fast, and the plastic shell to smell like a cheap toaster. One Madrid technician told me he now carries thermal cameras on house calls: the coin trend has become a warranty nightmare. Telefónica quietly logged a 14 % spike in replace-for-overheating tickets since the meme exploded on Spanish TikTok in March.

Why the hoax felt true
Placebo bandwidth is powerful. Reboot the router to clear the neighbor's microwave interference, drop a coin, run Speedtest thirty seconds later—voilà, 3 Mb extra. Correlation masquerades as causation. Mix in some bimetallic sparkle and the algorithm does the rest: #RouterHack racks up 120 million views, influencers sell affiliate links to aluminium foil tape, and the lie calcifies into lore.

What actually works, according to people who measure
Move the box to the centre of the home, one metre off the floor, antennas perpendicular. Update the firmware—many ISPs push latent WiFi 6 patches. Force a 40 MHz channel on 5 GHz if you live in a canyon of apartments. Buy a £30 used enterprise AP and run a cable; anything beats sorcery. And if you must tinker, print a parabolic reflector template from a 2006 MIT study: it adds 3 dBi for pennies, without suffocating the chipset.
The internet once routed around damage; now it monetises gullibility. Every coin parked on a router is a vote for superstition over spectrum analysis. Keep the change, lose the lag.
