Digi users worldwide experience brief voice service outage

Millions of Digi customers worldwide experienced a frustrating interruption to their voice and data services on Wednesday, April 8th. Initial reports flooded in throughout the morning, detailing complete call failure and SMS delivery issues, despite users maintaining consistent 4G/5G coverage and often experiencing seamless internet connectivity.

A technical deep dive: volte and ims at fault?

Digi confirmed a significant, nationwide incident, swiftly attributing the problem to a partial failure affecting voice and mobile data services. The crux of the problem, according to initial analysis, centered on the Voice over LTE (VoLTE) layer – a cornerstone of modern cellular networks – specifically leveraging the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) for call and message management. Many reported seeing the 4G/5G signal bars, browsing the web, and engaging on social media, only to be met with a complete system freeze or abrupt call drops when attempting to make or receive a call or send a text.

Interestingly, some users circumvented the issue by reverting to 2G or 3G networks, experiencing successful calls. This suggests a potential fault within the 5G/4G infrastructure itself, possibly impacting the ePDG server – responsible for secure internet access to the core network. The rapid recovery, attributed to prioritized internal protocols, highlighted the operator's responsiveness, but left many customers understandably frustrated.

Downdetector logs registered a surge in reports, jumping from over 1,200 notifications around 10:35 AM to more than 2,050 by 10:57 AM, primarily within Spain, with sporadic reports extending into the evening. This incident underscores the vulnerability of even the most sophisticated network architectures. As Digi prepares for a major restructuring in Spain, this outage serves as a stark reminder of the potential for unforeseen disruptions. The swift action to restore service – utilizing internal protocols and prioritizing resolution – demonstrated a clear commitment to its customer base, but the underlying technical challenge remains a key area of scrutiny.

Here’s what you can do if you’re currently affected: Initially, verify that the issue isn’t isolated to your device. A simple reboot, SIM card reset, and WiFi connectivity test can quickly rule out local problems. Maintaining a secondary communication method – a landline, for instance – is prudent in case of future disruptions. DIGI’s recent changes have been closely monitored, and while many users were able to restore service by temporarily switching to 4G, it’s advisable to experiment with network selections to identify a stable connection.
