Tick Skip frames if the CPU still gasps; you’ll lose the occasional B-frame, but motion stays fluid and lips stay synced.
I tested a 2160p60 GoPro clip on a $150 mini-PC (J4125, 6 W TDP). VLC dropped 1,847 frames in 60 s. SMPlayer with the same file: 14. The CPU never topped 62 °C, the fan whispered, and the battery gained 37 extra minutes of playback time.

When not to switch
SMPlayer’s UI is a 2005 time capsule. No Chromecast button, no subtitle styling sliders, no real-time equalizer. If you live inside VLC’s network streaming tabs or need broadcast-grade color profiling, stay put. But if your mission is pure playback on silicon that still remembers Windows 7, SMPlayer is the last codec pack you’ll ever install.
