Four humans will soon dive deeper into darkness than anyone in history
In a Houston clean room the size of a cathedral, four astronauts have spent months rehearsing their own ghost story: locking themselves inside a 9-ton aluminum sarcophagus, riding a controlled explosion 8,000 km beyond the Moon’s far side, then slingshotting home at 11 km every second. On Monday that script becomes real. Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen will board Orion for Artemis II, the first crewed mission to lunar distance since Apollo 17 closed the hatch 52 years ago.
The flight is only ten days, but NASA’s entire deep-space poker hand rides on it. A single cracked heat-shield tile, one bungled translunar burn, and the agency’s 2026 boots-on-regolith target collapses like a bad soufflé. Lori Glaze, standing in for the absentee exploration chief, put it bluntly to reporters last week: “If this capsule doesn’t come back perfect, we don’t get Artemis III.”
The gamble behind 400,000 km of vacuum
Artemis I proved the hardware could survive a robotic round trip. Artemis II swaps software dummies for four hearts, four brains and 200 micrograms of intestinal bacteria per crew member. That biological payload forces engineers to confront variables no wind-tunnel can model: carbon-dioxide scrubbers that might clog when four people exhale in synchrony, a toilet that could back-flow in zero-g, a circadian rhythm that will collide with a sunrise every 45 minutes.
Wiseman, a former Navy test pilot who once commanded the International Space Station, will be the first human to steer a vehicle faster than the space shuttle ever flew. During re-entry Orion will slam the atmosphere at Mach 32, converting its kinetic energy into a 2,700 °C plasma curtain. The heat shield—bolted on in 2022—has already charred once; NASA insists the scar tissue is cosmetic. Engineers lost sleep anyway, drilling core samples to confirm the Avcoat matrix hadn’t delaminated.
Glover, the pilot, will fire Orion’s auxiliary engines ten times, nudging the spacecraft through a trajectory so delicate that a 0.3-degree error adds 300 km to the closest approach. He trained inside a motion-base simulator until the hydraulic stench gave him headaches. “We crashed the sim hundreds of times,” he admitted. “That’s the point. Crash here, survive there.”

Inside the 300-cubic-foot marriage
The capsule’s habitable volume equals the cargo bed of a Ford F-150. For ten days four adults must share that metal box without ever stepping outside to stretch. Psychologists mapped every cubic inch: food packets Velcroed above the left knee, toothbrush clipped to the ceiling, privacy curtain that doubles as a radiation storm shelter. Koch, who once spent 328 days on the ISS, lobbied for a collapsible exercise bike; mass limits killed it. Instead the crew will isometrically push against the seats until their legs tremble.
Hansen, the rookie, carries Canada’s $2 billion bet: a smart robotic arm called Canadarm3 waiting on the lunar Gateway. If he returns sick or rattled, Ottawa’s entire deep-space industrial strategy stalls. He trained in Iceland’s basalt fields, stomping through volcanic ash to mimic the jagged regolith astronauts might one day mine for water.

What happens after splashdown
Recovery crews rehearsed 30 night-water landings off San Diego, practicing how to fish a 5.4-tonne oven out of the Pacific before the heat shield soaks up seawater and swells. Once Orion is craned aboard the USS San Diego, technicians will strip the heat shield down to the millimetre, hunting micro-fractures that could doom the next crew to carry actual lander hardware. Data recorders will yield 140 GB of telemetry; every byte either vindicates or buries the program.
NASA has already burned $93 billion on Artemis. The Senate appropriations committee—facing a $33 trillion national debt—warned the agency it will not bankroll another Apollo-style budget balloon. Either Orion nails Monday’s burn, or lawmakers will start asking why commercial capsules can’t do the job for half the price.
At dawn on launch day the four astronauts will walk out in their retro-orange suits, a color chosen not for style but for high-visibility rescue should they parachute into hostile terrain. They will ride an elevator 98 metres up the mobile launcher, cross the gantry, then crawl sideways into their 300-cubic-foot future. Twelve minutes later the Earth will drop away so fast the windows will blacken with stars. If everything goes right, they will see the far side of the Moon roll beneath them like a slow-motion baseball, then whip around the back and head home. If not, the silence that follows will echo for decades.
