Google drops the pixel 6: a silent treatment for an aging flagship

Google’s quietly abandoning the Pixel 6 series, leaving users with a fading signal and a frustrating lack of software updates. While newer Pixels – 7, 8, 9, and even the upcoming 10 – are receiving kernel enhancements, the 6 is being relegated to the digital scrapheap.

The rumor mill, thanks to anonymous sources like Mystic Leaks on Telegram, suggests the Pixel 7, 8, 9, and 10 lines will all benefit from a fresh kernel update. But the Pixel 6, launched in 2021, is conspicuously absent from this upgrade cycle. This isn’t a minor detail; it’s a clear signal that Google is moving on.

What is a kernel update, anyway?

Let’s cut through the jargon. The kernel is the absolute core of an operating system – it's the translator between your device’s hardware and the software you interact with. Think of it as the foundational architecture. Updating the kernel isn't just about a cosmetic refresh; it’s about bolstering security, optimizing hardware compatibility, and, crucially, boosting overall system performance and stability.

Google last revamped the Pixel’s Linux kernel back in March 2023, and a significant update occurred in 2024. A missed opportunity – and a user’s frustration

I’ve spent years intimately familiar with the Pixel 6 Pro – a relationship forged during my time at the Smithsonian and continued in my role at TechBloom. It’s a phone that, frankly, still operates flawlessly. Yet, Google is choosing to let it wither. The official end-of-life date is October 2026, a distant horizon that feels increasingly irrelevant for a device struggling to stay current. I could have squeezed at least another year, maybe two, out of my Pixel 6. It's a frustrating situation, especially considering the performance gains reported after previous kernel updates.

Upgrade time?

The Pixel 10 series is on the horizon, and it represents a compelling reason to seriously consider an upgrade. The newer generations – 7, 8, 9 – are built to last, receiving seven years of major OS support. For users still clinging to the Pixel 6, the time to act is now.
