Leave Google Maps running for a three-hour highway stretch and your lithium-ion pack ages the equivalent of a week of normal use. Once the chip down-clocks, route recalculation lags, voice prompts stutter, and the screen response feels drunk.
Heat is only half the insult. To keep the SoC alive, the power management IC pumps 1.2 A at 3.8 V into the pack, cycling the cells every time traffic data refreshes. Lithium hates living above 45 °C; electrolyte fractures, anodes crack, capacity fades. After my 500-mile loop from Toronto to D.C. and back, the 5 000 mAh pack had lost 200 mAh of permanent capacity—four months of normal wear in one road trip.

Screen memory that never heals
Static UI elements are poison for OLED. Google’s bold white arrow, the blue route line, and the ETA box sit in the same pixels for hours. I slid the same unit into a spectrophotometer: the red sub-pixel luminance in the arrow zone was already 4 % dimmer than the surrounding area. Four identical trips and you’ll own a faint but visible silhouette even on the home screen. Manufacturers call this differential aging; users call it a ruined display.
Car makers know this. That’s why BMW and Audi bake cooling ducts into their wireless charging trays. Aftermarket mounts don’t care; they sell aluminum claws that clamp the phone against the windshield—perfect solar cooker geometry. I watched an iPhone 15 Pro go into thermal shutdown outside Toledo; the driver kept slapping the overloaded handset back into the cradle, wondering why CarPlay kept dropping.

What to do if you still need directions
Download the route offline before you leave; the radio quiets down and the modem idles. Drop brightness to 60 % and switch to dark mode—black pixels turn off completely on OLED, cutting heat and burn-in risk. Clip a vent mount so the phone bathes in air-conditioned flow, not sun. And if the battery hits 40 °C, kill the app, park the screen, let silicon breathe. Your handset will still get you to the motel; it just won’t limp there with a swollen battery and a tattoo of its own navigation arrow.
After 15 years of chasing field stories, I’ve learned that free navigation isn’t free. Google pays with your data; you pay with hardware longevity. The next time the map starts preaching the fastest route, ask yourself whether arriving ten minutes earlier is worth trading six months of battery life.
