Why a smaller pill matters
Screen real estate is measured in millimetres, but perceived clutter is psychological. Shaving the Island’s footprint even slightly pushes the status bar upward, widens the video frame and, crucially, signals that apple still tinkers with the façade instead of coasting on the same cut-out for half a decade.
Engineers I spoke with in Shenzhen last month insist the bottleneck was never the camera; it’s the dot projector and infrared flood illuminator that need elbow room. The post implies apple will slide at least one of those modules under the glass, a move that TSMC’s 2 nm node—also slated for iPhone 18—makes electrically feasible by reducing heat and freeing internal volume.
From punch-hole dreams to pragmatic trims
Early roadmaps had the Pro models flaunting a left-corner punch hole and full under-panel Face ID. Then came the sobering yield reports: under-display sensors still murder contrast on OLED sheets. The compromise everyone mocked—“same island, smaller island”—now looks like the adult in the room.
Buyers who waited for a seamless slab will call it timid. Investors will call it iterative. Supply-chain auditors will call it low-risk, and low-risk is what keeps 200 million units on schedule.
