Insurance firms salivate: continuous skin readings could predict pressure ulcers weeks before they erupt, shaving billions off elder-care claims. For now, the capsule lives in climate-controlled showrooms and one Osaka rehab hospital, where nurses queue for selfies. Early adopters don’t buy a gadget; they buy a statement—an object that announces the owner has transcended the need to scrub their own back. Whether that counts as progress or the first slide into Wall-E-style infantilization depends on your tolerance for being tumble-dried like delicates.
The shower as we know it will not vanish overnight. But the seed is planted: hygiene can be outsourced like dishwashing or vacuuming.
