Lg’s hybrid ecall: a 5g backup for european safety nets

European automakers will be mandated to implement Next Generation eCall (NG eCall) – leveraging 4G and 5G networks – by 2027, but LG is deploying a more pragmatic solution: a hybrid system that prioritizes network resilience.

Bridging the coverage gap

Traditional eCall systems, now commonplace in modern vehicles, automatically trigger an emergency call when sensors detect a severe collision or airbag deployment. This sends critical data – location, technical specifications, and incident time – directly to the nearest emergency response center via 2G, 3G, or 4G. However, the rollout of these faster networks has exposed a critical vulnerability: patchy 4G and 5G coverage, particularly along highways and in rural areas.

LG, a global powerhouse with interests spanning electronics, automotive Technology, and even petrochemicals, is taking a different tack. The South Korean giant, renowned for its vertically integrated supply chain – researching, developing, and manufacturing its core technologies internally – is leading with its Telematic Solutions, including eCall. Their new Hybrid eCall system isn’t reliant solely on 5G. It’s designed to intelligently switch between 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks, attempting a 5G connection first. If unavailable, it gracefully degrades to 4G, and so on, until the vital accident data can be transmitted. This redundancy addresses the very real concern of connectivity failures, ensuring that emergency services receive critical information regardless of network conditions. Lee Sang-yong, Director of R&D at VS in LG Vehicle Solutions, stated, “We will consolidate our leadership in connected automotive Technology by leveraging our global, leading telematic Technology and competitive advantage, adhering to stringent European safety and regulatory standards.
