Modder crams a 250 fps windows rig inside an xbox series x shell
While Microsoft keeps teasing native PC games on Xbox, a YouTuber called PhasedTech just got tired of waiting and built the Frankenstein rig Redmond never delivered: a fully-functional Windows gaming PC squeezed into a stock Series X chassis that doubles the console’s frame rate without breaking 75 °C.
The guts of a series x, the soul of a high-end pc
Instead of the custom 8-core AMD APU designed by Microsoft, the black monolith now hosts an Intel NUC 12 Extreme Compute Element—a credit-card-sized board packing a 12-core Core i7-12700, 32 GB of DDR4 and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. A Gigabyte RTX 5060 handles graphics, pulling air through the original 120 mm exhaust fan. The whole contraption boots Windows 11 and spits out 100-140 fps in AAA titles at 1440p, scaling to 250 fps in Counter-Strike 2.
PhasedTech had already shoved an RTX 3050 inside an Xbox One S, so he knew the drill: gut the plastic skeleton, 3-D-print custom standoffs, and carve out the interior frame until a Flex-ATX 600 W PSU fits vertically. External I/O was re-routed through a hand-milled aluminum plate that replaces the rear panel; USB-C, DisplayPort and even a Wi-Fi antenna now peek out where HDMI once lived. The case dimensions remain untouched—Microsoft’s industrial design stays intact, only the insides scream “PC master race.”

Why this stunt matters beyond reddit karma
Console hardware is subsidized; PC components are not. By exploiting the Series X’s compact thermal design and pairing it with off-the-shelf parts, PhasedTech exposed a loophole: you can buy a second-hand shell for $250, slide in $900 of NUC and GPU, and outperform a $1,500 mini-ITX build half the size. Microsoft’s promised “Windows gaming on Xbox” was supposed to close the ecosystem gap; instead, a lone modder beat them to market with a screwdriver and a soldering iron.
The project is also a thermal flex. The Series X’s vapor-chamber heatsink was engineered for a 200 W APU; PhasedTech’s load hovers around 180 W thanks to Intel’s 10 nm process and Nvidia’s efficiency gains. Result: CPU and GPU temps park below 75 °C under sustained load—cooler than most boutique mini-PCs twice the volume.
Microsoft declined to comment, but engineers inside Xbox have privately circulated the build video, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The message is clear: if the company wants to keep selling hardware as a gateway to Game Pass, it might need to deliver the hybrid experience fans are already hacking together in their living rooms.
PhasedTech is already taking requests for a PS5 version. Supply of discarded shells, he says, is the only bottleneck.
