Mova dumps perimeter wire, lets lidar mow your messiest lawn at 80% slopes
While the rest of the robot-mower industry still asks home-owners to bury copper wire like it’s 1995, Mova just shipped three line-ups that find the grass themselves with spinning lasers, 4G back-haul and enough torque to climb a black-diamond ski run.
The 250 € entry fee buys you a pair of eyes
ViAX, the cheapest series, starts at 579 € for 250 m² gardens. Two ultra-HDR cameras feed an on-board CNN nicknamed UltraEyes 1.0; the network recognizes 300 object classes—cats, stones, toddlers—at 70 m and slams the brakes or sneaks closer depending on what it sees. No pegs, no wire, no Sunday spent kneeling on turf.
A 3-D boundary map builds in the first pass; afterwards you schedule stripes, spirals or random patterns from the app and ban flower beds with a finger swipe. Battery life is a quiet 90 minutes, plenty for a city patio that once ate an entire Saturday morning.

Lidax ultra turns darkness and drizzle into shift hours
Step up to LiDAX Ultra and the headline sensor becomes a 360° LiDAR puck spinning at 10 Hz, delivering centimetre-grade positioning rain or star-light. A 1080p HDR camera still rides shotgun, but only to classify grass height and leaf density so the blade height servos adjust on the fly.
4G radios pop into the 1500 € and 2000 € models, keeping the bot online when the property line is half a kilometre from the router. The 45 % slope rating is not marketing bravado: I watched the pre-production unit claw up a retaining wall in Ghent that would stall a ride-on.

Ultra awd is the goat-track specialist
Rock gardens, tree roots, ankle-breaking holes—terrain that voids most warranties—is exactly where the LiDAX Ultra AWD lineup hunts. Four hub motors, each good for 35 Nm, push the 18 kg machine up 80 % grades while twin 3-D LiDAR stacks paint a live depth map at 30 fps.
The 36 V / 20 Ah pack, double the sector average, chews through 1 000 m² of dense fescue on one charge. Cutting width is 40 cm, yet the chassis narrows to 59 cm so it threads between olive trees and terracotta pots without a scratch. Prices open at 1 599 €; the top model will scalp 2 000 m² before it heads home.
Mova’s engineers admit they borrowed rover suspension kinematics from university lunar teams. The payoff: a mower that can pop a 6 cm kerbstone, land level and keep spinning blades at 3 200 rpm. Home-owners with alpine backyards just ran out of excuses.

Why this matters beyond tidy lawns
Autonomous outdoor robotics has long been tethered by perimeter wire, RTK base stations or cloud latency. Mova bundles SLAM, 4G and edge inference in a plastic chassis that costs less than a mid-range e-bike. The ripple effect: every landscaping firm now faces a disposable robot that never calls in sick, never spills petrol, and invoices zero overtime.
Investors noticed. Since January, Mova’s Series B valuation tripled to 1.4 billion €, and component suppliers from Shenzhen to Stuttgart are ramping solid-state LiDAR orders originally destined for robo-taxis. Garden care is becoming the sandbox where autonomy proves it can survive dust, vibration and consumer price tags before jumping to agriculture or security.
The grass, ironically, is now the training ground for machines that will soon pick oranges, patrol factories and maybe map Mars. Mova just made cutting it the least interesting part of the story.
