This isn’t pageantry. Inside the VAB engineers already swapped out a helium check valve that suffocated upper-stage pressurization during the 21 February wet dress. They also slapped in fresh flight-termination batteries, recharged Orion’s launch-abort power cells and replaced an O-ring on the core-stage LOX feed that had started to cryofreeze itself to the flange. Translation: every leak that could abort the mission mid-flight has been hunted down and patched—at least on paper.

Four humans, ten days, one lunar slingshot
Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canadian Jeremy Hansen will ride the Orion spacecraft around the far side of the Moon, testing life-support, heat-shield and comms systems at 32 times the speed of sound. If the trajectory holds, they’ll splash down in the Pacific exactly ten days after liftoff, proving the Block 1 SLS can safely deliver living cargo beyond low-Earth orbit—something no rocket has done since Apollo 17.
Beyond symbolism, the flight is a live-fire audit of NASA’s $93 billion Moon-to-Mars ledger. Every sensor reading will feed directly into the design tweaks needed for the beefier Block 1B and, eventually, the reusable landers that will carry boots to the lunar south pole in 2026. Fail now and Congress will happily re-route that cash toward Mars robots; succeed and the agency keeps its political oxygen for another budget cycle.
Pad 39B will host final coolant loading and a 46-hour countdown starting 30 March. If Florida behaves, the RS-25 engines will ignite at 09:06 Eastern on 1 April—no joke, just fire and thunder.
