Nasa's artemis ii: a lunar return half a century in the making
After decades of dreaming and near misses, humanity is poised to return to the lunar vicinity. NASA’s Artemis II mission, carrying a crew of four, is slated to launch Thursday from Kennedy Space Center, marking the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.
A critical dress rehearsal for mars
The ten-day voyage isn't a landing—not yet. Instead, Artemis II is a vital, high-stakes systems check for the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft, both developed by Boeing and Lockheed Martin respectively. Multiple delays have plagued the SLS program, making this mission’s success all the more critical to the ambitious Artemis campaign, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon by 2028 and, ultimately, pave the way for crewed missions to Mars.
According to NASA engineer Luis Salcedo, the mission's purpose extends far beyond a simple lunar orbit. “This isn't just about going around the Moon,” he explained. “It’s about understanding how all the spacecraft’s systems perform in deep space—knowledge we’ll need to explore further afield, like Mars. The Moon is our ideal proving ground for developing communication systems, in-situ resource utilization, and astronaut care protocols for long-duration missions.” The agency is already constructing lunar landers and plans to leverage lunar resources for fuel, energy and communication infrastructure.
The crew—Commander Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, Victor Glover, and Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency—arrived at Launch Complex 39 at 2:14 PM EDT, four hours prior to the scheduled liftoff. As per tradition dating back to Apollo 7, the astronauts conducted their pre-launch walk, culminating in a final farewell to the media from within the pristine “White Room,” a meticulously controlled environment where technicians perform final system checks.
Donning their custom-designed orange spacesuits—a departure from the iconic white suits of the Apollo era—the astronauts emphasized the improvements in temperature regulation, mobility, and protection. Each suit features an integrated beacon and emergency life support system, though they will shed these protective layers just thirty minutes after achieving orbit and won’t wear them again until their return.

Millions of names aboard
Adding a unique touch to the mission, millions of names—submitted through NASA’s “Send Your Name to the Moon” campaign—are etched onto a memory card aboard Orion. The card is sewn inside a ‘Rise’ zero-gravity indicator, chosen from thousands of submissions across more than 50 countries. The design is inspired by the iconic Earthrise photograph taken during the Apollo 8 mission.
Astronauts aboard Orion will experience a breathtaking view of the Moon, appearing roughly the size of a basketball. This marks a historic moment: the first time human eyes will directly observe the far side of the Moon, a perspective previously only captured by satellites. The mission is expected to reach a peak distance of over 400,000 kilometers from Earth, surpassing the record set by Apollo 13.
While the Artemis II mission doesn’t represent a return to the lunar surface, it's a significant leap towards that goal. As NASA engineer Salcedo succinctly put it, “This is just the beginning.”
