But this isn’t just a nostalgic echo; it’s a bold step toward a sustained human presence on the Moon, and a surprising amount of that ambition is being fueled by Spanish ingenuity.

Aboard the Orion spacecraft, a diverse crew – Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch (the first woman to reach lunar orbit), Victor Glover (the first African American to do so), and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen – achieved a critical milestone: reaching the far side of the Moon. The mission’s primary goal is to validate Orion’s life support systems with a crew onboard, a prerequisite for establishing a permanent lunar base. While the headlines rightly focus on the astronauts and the groundbreaking nature of the flight, a deeper look reveals a complex web of international collaboration—and a key, often overlooked, contribution from Spain.

At the heart of Orion’s functionality lies the European Service Module (ESM), essentially the spacecraft's power core. Built by European industry under the leadership of the ESA and assembled by Airbus in Bremen, Germany, the ESM draws on expertise from over 20 companies across 10 European nations. It provides essential functions: power generation and distribution, propulsion, thermal control, and crucially, water, air, and electricity management. And it’s here that Spanish companies have stepped up in a significant way.

Airbus Crisa in Tres Cantos, for instance, has been entrusted with developing Thermal Control Units (TCUs) for the ESM—a first for NASA, placing this critical system in the hands of a non-US company. Without these units, the astronauts simply wouldn’t survive. They regulate temperature, fluctuating between a frigid -200 degrees Celsius in shadow and a scorching 100 degrees Celsius in sunlight, while simultaneously maintaining water and air supplies. Each ESM boasts two TCUs, constantly working to keep temperatures within safe limits, managing a power load equivalent to heating a small room in winter.

Beyond thermal control, GMV is contributing vital system engineering expertise. Working alongside the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and ESA, GMV has been instrumental in defining mission requirements and developing a crucial anomaly management tool. This system, designed to inform, analyze, and resolve potential issues during operations, is a critical safety net. They’ve even trained the astronauts in the use of ESA’s EveryWear system—a medical and human activity monitoring application honed over nearly a decade on the International Space Station—allowing astronauts to track food and medication intake, complete medical questionnaires, and communicate privately with flight surgeons.

HV Sistemas, based in Madrid, has designed and manufactured test benches for the Service Module’s Consumables Storage System (CSS), while ALTER, from Seville, has handled the acquisition of critical electronic components and conducted laboratory testing, even evaluating high-performance LEDs for future robotic applications on the lunar surface. Even the monitoring of the mission itself has a Spanish footprint: Integrasys, also from Seville, is the sole Spanish company selected by NASA to track Artemis II using a 2.4-meter Orbisat antenna at the University of Seville.

But the Spanish contribution isn't limited to hardware. The antenna, working in tandem with the University's expertise, is measuring the Doppler effect—a parameter vital for calculating the vehicle’s position and trajectory, feeding that data directly to NASA in real-time. The combined effort highlights a shift: space exploration is no longer solely the domain of a handful of nations; it’s a global endeavor, powered by diverse expertise.

As the Orion’s crew prepares for their return to Earth, with the separation of the crew and service modules—the latter destined for a controlled disintegration—one thing is clear: Artemis II isn’t just about returning to the Moon. It’s about building a sustainable future there, and Spain is playing a pivotal role in that ambition.
