Memory makers cash in on ai gold rush
Micron and SK Hynix are auctioning wafers like vintage Bordeaux. Spot prices for 16 Gb LPDDR6 dice have doubled since October, and handset OEMs are passing the pain straight to pre-order pages. OnePlus insiders whisper the 16 Pro could breach the $1,200 barrier, a 20 % hike over the 15 Pro, unless the company guts the camera stack or ships a second, gimped SKU with last-gen LPDDR5X.
The raw numbers look obscene: 9,000 mAh silicon-carbon pack, UFS 4.1 at 1 TB, 240 Hz 1.5K panel. But the headline is the memory subsystem. LPDDR6 pushes 17 Gb/s per pin, 1.3× the bandwidth of LPDDR5X, while slicing active power by 15 %. Early silicon yields are mid-30 %, and every defective 1α nm wafer ends up on someone’s spreadsheet as a $40 tax.
Xiaica and samsung are next in line
My contacts at Xiaomi say the 18 Ultra will follow within a quarter, and Samsung’s Galaxy S26 FE is testing the same controllers. Once the trio locks in, expect a domino effect: mid-range handsets stuck on LPDDR5 will feel sluggish by Christmas 2026, forcing consumers to pay the premium or tolerate visibly slower AI workloads. Carriers love it; higher ASPs mean fatter subsidies and longer installment locks.
OnePlus has three options, none painless. Eat the margin and watch investors howl. Split the line, fragment the brand. Or gamble on a “founders edition” at $1,299 and pray the speed fetishists show up. Pete Lau’s team chose door number three, according to two OEM veteran sources. The invite-only launch event is already penciled for late August in Barcelona, right before IFA steals the oxygen.
