Oppo bets on 10x glass while rivals chase ai crop zoom
Oppo will unveil the Find X9 Ultra on 21 April at 7 p.m. in Beijing, and the invite is blunt: twin 200 MP sensors plus a 230 mm periscope that still moves glass instead of leaning on AI smoke and mirrors.
The long lens returns
After three years of “periscope” modules stuck at 3×-5×, the industry had quietly agreed that longer glass was dead. Samsung dropped 10× after the S23 Ultra, Xiaomi and Vivo chased bigger short telephotos, and marketing slides filled the gap with semantic zoom. Oppo’s engineers clearly never got the memo. Their Quintuple Prism Reflection design folds the light path five times inside three elements, shaving 33 % volume off last-gen bricks while keeping true 10× (≈230 mm) reach. Translation: no in-sensor crop, no cloud-enhanced hallucinations—just photons travelling 40 mm inside a phone that still fits a jeans pocket.
The heart of the module is Samsung’s ISOCELL JNL 50 MP sensor behind an f/3.5 lens. Oppo pairs it with a second periscope—3×, 85 mm—using OmniVision’s 200 MP OV52A, plus a 1/1.12ʺ 200 MP LYT-901 main shooter. Add a 14 mm ultrawide and you get the most vertically stacked camera bar since Nokia’s 808 PureView.
Silicon, cell and screen to match
Specs sheets rarely thrill any more, but two numbers stand out: 7 050 mAh and 100 W. Oppo’s silicon-carbon pack is 2 000 mAh fatter than the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s, yet the chassis stays under 9 mm. A 6.82-inch flat 2K AMOLED, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, 16 GB LPDDR5X and 512 GB UFS 4.1 round out the kitchen-sink approach. Wireless charging hits 50 W—half what the wired brick promises, still double what Google’s Pixel 10 will manage.
Global firmware is confirmed, ending the lottery that forced grey-import buyers to sideload banking apps or live without push notifications. ColorOS 16—Android 16 underneath—ships in four finishes, including a vegan leather teal that already sold out on Oppo's Chinese pre-order page.
A dare to samsung and google
The subtext is impossible to miss. While Samsung markets circle-to-search and Google brags about Video Boost, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi keep stuffing hardware Western flagships abandoned. The Find X9 Ultra is the most explicit flex yet: a 230 mm periscope, two 200 MP sensors and a battery that laughs at all-day use.
Reviewers will test whether five internal reflections smear detail at 30× or if Oppo’s new ISP can tame the thermal load. But the message is already sharp: glass still beats algorithms, and the Chinese labs know it. If the sample shots floating on Weibo hold up, Samsung’s next Unpacked will feel very long indeed.
