Oppo find x9 ultra's 10x zoom wants to kill your camera bag
Oppo just drew a line in the sand. The Find X9 Ultra, set to launch in China on April 21, arrives with a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto that the company claims delivers true optical quality at 10x — and a hybrid reach of 20x that it's calling the first of its kind in the industry. Pete Lau, Oppo's Senior VP and Chief Product Officer, didn't hedge: "It's your next camera." That's not marketing copy. That's a direct challenge to Canon, Sony, and every mirrorless shooter you've been lugging around in a backpack.
Why 10x matters when everyone else stopped at 5x
Here's the context that makes this announcement sting a little. Oppo was the company that pioneered periscope telephoto integration back in 2019 with the Reno 10x Zoom — a 13MP lens delivering 6x optical zoom with a 10x hybrid. Samsung took until 2022 and the Galaxy S22 Ultra to match that kind of reach, and even then it required two separate telephoto modules. What happened next is the part nobody in the industry likes to talk about: flagship phones quietly retreated. The trend reversed. By the mid-2020s, 3x and 5x had become the accepted ceiling, a quiet admission that fitting serious optics inside a 7mm chassis is genuinely hard engineering.
Oppo's answer to that retreat is a structure they're calling the Quintuple Prism Reflection Periscope. Five separate reflections bounce light through the optical path in a way that satisfies the physical requirements of a 10x zoom while shrinking the camera module length by 30 percent. That's not an incremental refinement. Reducing module size by nearly a third while increasing optical reach is the kind of tradeoff that usually exists only on paper.

The optical architecture doing the heavy lifting
Paired with the periscope structure is what Oppo calls the Pristine Optical Path Architecture — a prism assembly built from three precision-machined components separated by a nanoscale-aperture diaphragm and a specialized air capsule. The air capsule detail is the one that caught my attention. Controlling the optical medium between elements at that scale is the kind of manufacturing precision you'd expect from a Leica production line, not a consumer smartphone. Whether Oppo's production tolerances can hold that promise at volume is a different question entirely, and one that only a teardown will answer.
The stabilization system rounds out the package. Sensor Shift OIS — the same approach Apple brought to the iPhone 12 Pro Max and which has since become the gold standard for handheld telephoto stability — handles micro-tremors at maximum zoom. At 10x optical, even a heartbeat can ruin a frame. Sensor Shift moves the image sensor itself rather than relying solely on lens element compensation, which is meaningfully better at the long end.

Hasselblad's fingerprints are on this
Oppo's partnership with Hasselblad isn't new, but the Find X9 Ultra represents what looks like the deepest integration yet. The Swedish optics house — the same brand that went to the moon on Apollo 11 — has been involved in color science and lens tuning across recent OnePlus and Oppo flagships. With a sensor this capable, the Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution processing pipeline will be the thing that separates a technically impressive spec sheet from photographs that actually hold up on a large monitor.
The full specification set beyond the telephoto remains unconfirmed ahead of the April 21 event. But the Ultra-Sensing Optical-Zoom lens alone is enough to reframe the conversation around what a flagship camera phone is supposed to be in 2025. The smartphone industry spent three years quietly lowering its telephoto ambitions. Oppo just reminded everyone why those ambitions existed in the first place.
