Forget incremental upgrades; Oppo is challenging the status quo with a dual-camera system designed to deliver both everyday versatility and specialized telephoto performance—a move that could ripple through the flagship smartphone market.
Breaking the 6x zoom barrier
For years, flagship phones have largely settled on a 3x to 6x optical zoom range. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to offer 4x, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra likely sticks with 5x. Even Xiaomi and Vivo’s top models rarely venture beyond 6x. But Oppo, in a bold departure, is pushing the boundaries with a built-in 10x optical zoom—a leap that hasn't been seen consistently on high-end smartphones since older Galaxy S Ultra models.

Zhuo Shijie, Oppo’s Find Series product manager, explained the goal is to provide instant long-range zoom without relying on cumbersome external lenses. The 10x system, co-engineered with Hasselblad, promises detailed shots and consistent color tuning from the get-go.
But Oppo isn't stopping there. Recognizing the limitations of a fixed lens, they’re also developing a dedicated external telephoto module. This modular approach allows users to seamlessly switch between everyday photography and more specialized scenarios, offering the best of both worlds.
The trade-offs of extreme zoom
A 230mm focal length – what 10x zoom equates to – unlocks a new level of photographic possibility. Imagine capturing a clear shot of a concert performer from the back of the venue or documenting wildlife without disturbing the habitat. In travel photography, intricate architectural details atop distant buildings and mountains suddenly become accessible.
However, there's a catch. Narrowing the field of view creates a compressed perspective, potentially flattening depth and leading to images that feel disconnected. While ideal for distant landscapes, this effect can detract from shots where foreground, midground, and background separation are desired.
