Phones 4u founder prioritizes thrift over yachts for his eight kids
John Caudwell, the British multi-millionaire who built and sold mobile phone empires Phones 4u and Singlepoint, isn’t about to let his progeny inherit a sense of entitlement alongside a hefty trust fund. In a candid interview with Business Insider, the tech veteran, now focused on children’s charities and property investment, outlines a surprisingly grounded approach to raising his eight children, ranging in age from two to an astonishing 47.

Quality time over caviar: a childhood rooted in value
Caudwell's upbringing in a modest Stoke-on-Trent terraced house instilled a deep appreciation for the value of hard work and resourcefulness. “I didn’t have much,” he admits, “and I don’t want my children to grow up not appreciating that.” The key, he believes, isn’t to deprive them entirely, but to avoid the “overcorrection” often seen in the children of the ultra-wealthy.
While his time was stretched thin during the early years of building his businesses, Caudwell emphasizes a commitment to “quality time,” consistently prioritizing attendance at sporting events and awards ceremonies. Now, with more hands-on involvement in their upbringing, the focus shifts toward practical lessons.
“We do most of the childcare ourselves,” Caudwell explains. “We have two housekeepers, but school is the real answer—from 9 am to 4 pm. That gives them discipline, entertainment, interest, and education.” He’s adamant about grounding his children in the realities of everyday life, even amidst considerable wealth. A recent family yacht vacation, for instance, was primarily a personal indulgence.
