While the rest of the house has gone smart—lights that answer to Alexa, ovens you preheat from the metro—electricity still crawls out of the wall like it did in 1953. One hole, one plug, and when that is not enough we daisy-chain plastic bars until the living room looks like a Medusa’s head of PVC. A Spanish-German start-up has decided the nonsense ends now: instead of adding cables, it deletes them.
The trick is a 24-volt copper rail that hides under the skirting board
Think of it as a mini subway line for electrons. Once the rail is live, thumb-sized modules—USB-C, Schuko, induction pad, even a tiny 16 A oven socket—snap on magnetically and glide to wherever the blender, tablet or e-bike happens to be. No screwdriver, no downtime, no “honey, we need to drill again”. The rail draws max 3 600 W, enough for a countertop induction hob; add a second rail and you can circle the kitchen island without ever seeing a cord touch the floor.
Xiaomi tested the concept last year in 8 000 Beijing flats. Average resident re-arranged furniture 2.4 times in twelve months; socket migration time dropped from 42 minutes to 12 seconds. The company’s data scientists noticed a side effect: standby power fell 11 % because people physically removed the module instead of leaving the brick in situ. Multiply that by the 300 million European households still using 1980s wiring and you get a 4.3 TWh saving—Denmark’s entire lighting budget.

Electricians hate it, landlords love it
Spanish regulations still require a junction box every 3.5 m; the rail turns that rule into origami. Installation unions have filed three cautelares arguing the system “erases craft demarcation”, but housing cooperatives counter with numbers: retrofitting a 60 m² flat with traditional trunking costs €1 400 and two days of dust. The rail kit lands at €380 and is finished before lunch, coffee break included. In Berlin, where 72 % of renters move every four years, landlords are writing the rail into the standard lease: tenant leaves, modules pop off, walls remain virgin.
Early adopters are not minimalist influencers but parents of toddlers who treat cables as spaghetti. Barcelona’s Hospital Sant Joan reports a 28 % drop in living-room falls since the rail appeared in 212 pilot homes. The modules sit flush against the wall; no dangly invitation to yank.

The next firmware update will carry data, not just power
Engineers at Fraunhofer ISE have already printed 2 cm modules that embed HomePlug AV2 chips. Each socket becomes a mesh node, turning the skirting board into a 1 Gbps backbone that laughs at concrete walls. Expect a firmware push this autumn; routers could become as obsolete as the landline.
Power strips will not vanish overnight—warehouses will still stock them beside fax machines—but the message is clear: electricity is no longer a place, it is a service that follows the coffee maker. The wall won the first hundred years; now it surrenders.
