He followed Musk from Tesla’s Autopilot bunker—where he oversaw server farms that trained Full Self-Driving—to Twitter’s post-takeover chop shop, then to xAI’s launchpad in 2023. His Michigan Tech pedigree and lifelong friendship with Musk’s cousin James Musk made him part of the family, not just the payroll.
Valuation soars while talent drains
The startup still commands a reported $250 billion price tag, yet trails OpenAI and Anthropic on every public benchmark. Entire product verticals—video generator Grok Imagine and AI agent Macrohard—were axed this spring, taking dozens of engineers with them. Musk is hiring again, poaching Cursor leads Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg last week, but new faces can’t mask the institutional memory walking out the door.
Nordeen is not talking; xAI PR never answers the phone. The only statement came from a since-deleted beach photo: a quiet drink emoji that reads like a sigh of relief. When the last founder leaves, the company ceases to be a startup and becomes a satellite—orbiting the mothership, crewed by temps and stock options.
