Samsung's smart glasses: a display-less gamble?

Samsung is betting big on augmented reality, and its first foray into smart glasses – dubbed ‘Galaxy Glasses’ – is already generating buzz, and a healthy dose of skepticism.

A stark revelation: no screen in sight

Leaked renders, courtesy of OnLeaks and Android Headlines, reveal a startling design: Samsung’s initial smart glasses won’t feature a display. Instead, they’ll closely resemble the Meta Ray-Ban, relying on external connectivity for visuals. This isn’t a failure, per se, but a significant divergence from the expected premium experience.

The renders hint at a 12MP camera, a Snapdragon AR1 processor, and a modest 155mAh battery – specs that suggest a focus on core AR functionality rather than high-end multimedia. Rumors point to a potential model codenamed ‘Jinju,’ previously referred to as ‘Haean,’ which will reportedly house a microLED display in a future iteration, slated for release next year.

Currently, the display-less model is projected to land between $379 and $499. The version with a display could escalate to $600-$900 – figures that underscore the considerable investment Samsung is making. The company is aiming to debut these glasses at its Galaxy Unpacked event in July, alongside the next-generation Z Fold and Flip devices, and the Galaxy Watch 9. But the market remains cautious; sales might not materialize until later in the year.

Beyond the hype

Smart glasses have long been a concept plagued by unfulfilled promises. Samsung’s move – ditching the display – represents a critical test of the Technology’s viability. It’s a calculated risk, potentially positioning the Galaxy Glasses as an entry-level option, but also carries the risk of alienating consumers expecting a more polished, Samsung-branded experience. The true measure of success will be whether Samsung can leverage this initial offering to establish a foothold in the burgeoning augmented reality landscape – or simply confirm that this market segment is destined to remain a niche pursuit.
