The plant, hidden inside the Ciuden technology park, is no longer a pilot. It is now the largest vanadium-flow storage array on the continent, a hybrid Frankenstein that also feeds a 5,8 MWh sodium–sulfur stack and a 1,3 MWh lithium-ion pack tuned for millisecond grid spikes. Together they form a 15 MWh energy sponge that can keep 1 500 Spanish homes lit for ten hours straight without help from a single gas turbine.
A chemistry lesson written in tanks, not cells
Vanadium flow batteries are the anti-Tesla: no cobalt, no nickel, no thermal-runaway fireworks. The energy lives in the oxidation states of the same element—V²⁺, V³⁺, V⁴⁺, V⁵⁺—circulating between two plastic tanks the size of swimming pools. Need more duration? Weld on another tank. Need more power? Stack more cell frames. The membrane does not care how fat the electrolyte belly grows, which is why Ciuden’s battery is designed for 20-plus years and 15 000 cycles, numbers that make lithium economics blush.
Spanish utility CYMI landed the €6,4 million contract financed by the EU Recovery Plan, beating out German and Nordic consortia that banked on lithium-iron-phosphate scale-ups. The win gives Spain something Berlin and Stockholm still lack: a real-world sandbox where electrolyzers, inverters and redox tanks share the same SCADA dashboard. Two 500 kW PEM electrolyzers sit beside the battery hall, turning noon solar surpluses into 100 kg of green hydrogen per day, a loop that will be stress-tested this summer when solar irradiance peaks above 1 100 W/m².

Ciuden’s demo is the first to hit triple-digit megawatt-hours without lithium price hedges or Korean cell queues.
Inside the control room, a wall of screens tracks vanadium valence in real time. When the state-of-charge meter hits 95 %, the algorithm opens the hydrogen valve and starts stuffing a 300-bar tube trailer. One engineer jokes they are ‘parking sunlight in two garages’—electrons in vanadium tanks, molecules in steel cylinders. The joke hides a serious wager: if Spain can prove hybrid storage prints money at small scale, the same recipe scales to 100 MWh sites already zoned outside Valladolid and Murcia.
Word in Madrid is that the Ministry for Ecological Transition will float the next tender before summer recess. The ask: 200 MWh, zero subsidies, fifteen-year availability contract. Battery vendors who laughed at flow chemistry five years ago are now rewriting proposals and hunting for vanadium pentoxide stockpiles in South Africa and China. The reason is brutal and simple: lithium may own the hype, but vanadium just stole the duration crown in Europe, and Spain set the price of admission at six euros and forty cents per taxpayer.
