Stop aiming router antennas at your tv — you're killing the signal
Your Wi-Fi stutters, your 4K stream drops, your Zoom freezes, and the culprit is probably the pair of plastic sticks you keep swivelling toward your sofa. They are not laser pointers; they are toroidal-field antennas broadcasting a doughnut, not a spear.
The doughnut myth that ruins 9 out of 10 home networks
Most users shove the router behind the TV, tilt all three paddles forward like a salute, and wonder why the bedroom gets two bars. The radiation pattern is weakest along the tip axis; pointing an antenna at a device literally sends the null straight into that room. Instead, stand it vertical and the fat part of the doughnut rolls sideways through walls. Lay it flat and the signal shoots up and down — great for multi-storey houses, useless for a single-floor flat.
Manufacturers ship three or four paddles so you can sculpt the field. Dave Snelling, network architect at UK-based MakeUseOf, runs the numbers: a mixed 45-90-45-degree layout can raise throughput 38 % on the same channel without touching the ISP plan. The trick is orthogonality, not aim.

Metal microwaves and the bluetooth swamp
Even perfect angles collapse if the box sits next to a 2.4 GHz baby monitor or above a microwave. Wi-Fi 6 and the incoming Wi-Fi 7 radios use 160 MHz channels that overlap with everything from cordless phones to LED controllers. A router parked one metre from a mirror creates a standing wave that cancels itself; move it 30 cm and the same room jumps from 80 Mbps to 320 Mbps on a 5 GHz QAM-256 link.
Modern MU-MIMO gear can talk to eight clients at once, but only if the first reflection is clean. Old 802.11n boxes without beamforming treat every paddle as a dumb radiator; upgrading a 2014 relic to a Wi-Fi 6E model under €90 often outperforms adding mesh nodes.

The 30-second field test
Unplug every antenna, hold one horizontally at shoulder height, run a speed test, then switch to vertical. Note the delta, repeat for each paddle, lock them in the two orientations that scored highest. No apps, no aluminum origami, no repeaters. One reader in Valencia cut latency in half for his PS5 by simply folding the middle antenna flat while leaving the outer pair upright — zero euros spent.
Next time the buffer wheel spins, look at the paddles before you dial the ISP. Angle beats bandwidth, and physics doesn’t care how much you pay for gigabit fibre.
