Thales turns sea lanes into mine-free corridors with a backpack-ready war room
A week after Iran seeded the Strait of Hormuz with smart sea mines, a French engineer zipped open a Peli-case on the deck of FS Languedoc and booted up a pop-up operations centre no bigger than two office desks. Inside: enough compute to run an entire mine-countermeasures squadron, fuse data from half-a-dozen NATO navies, and let a 22-year-old lieutenant delete an under-water bomb without putting a single diver at risk. The name on the lid reads Expeditionary PathMaster; the buyer list already includes Paris and London; and the message to every tanker captain queuing outside the Persian Gulf is blunt—your detour just got shorter.
A laptop, a drone and 99 % certainty
Thales has been selling mine-hunting kit for decades, but the new e-POC node shrinks the usual flagship combat centre into a rugged 35 kg cube that fits in a Chinook or a RIB. One cable to a rugged tablet, one power lead to a diesel crate, and the operator inherits a feed from SAMDIS—a synthetic-aperture sonar that stitches 3-D shadows so finely it can tell a World-War-II horned mine from a discarded fridge. cortAIx, the company’s home-grown AI stack, chews through the acoustic stream in real time, spitting red icons for “explosive” and grey ones for “rock” with a 99 % hit rate that naval officers call “good enough to bet a hull on”.
The trick is modularity. A Lithuanian Navy test last winter paired the French sonar with a third-party Swedish AUV, a British REMUS drone and an old German mine-hunter whose navigation radar still runs Windows XP. e-POC ingested them all, assigned way-points, and handed the kill chain to a fibre-optic tethered ROV that placed a shaped charge under the mine and backed off. Total human exposure: two technicians inside a tarp tent on Klaipėda pier, coffee machine hissing beside the server rack.

Why hormuz matters more than ever
Every day 21 million barrels of oil pass through a 21-mile-wide chokepoint. A single drifting mine—cost: €35,000—can idle a billion-dollar VLCC for weeks and jack global crude by five dollars in the time it takes to post a TikTok. Tehran knows this; so do underwriters at Lloyd’s who last month added a 7 % war-risk premium for any hull transiting the Gulf. What they did not yet factor in is a system that can clear a 100-nautical-mile transit corridor in 48 hours using two autonomous surface drones, one portable ops cube and zero divers.
Thales declines to quote a unit price—“it depends on how many sonar arrays you want, and whether you need the cyber-hardened version”—but Royal Navy sources hint at £15 million per four-pack, cheap compared with the half-billion price tag of a new Type 32 frigate. France has already fielded five sets; Britain took four last quarter and quietly forward-based one in Bahrain, 60 nautical miles from the minefields.

The ai that learned to forget coral
False positives used to plague mine warfare: every boulder, coral head or shopping trolley demanded a detour. cortAIx’s latest model, trained on 2.3 million classified sonar snippets, now suppresses 94 % of clutter before the operator even sees it. The side benefit: fewer munitions wasted on seabed scrap, and a lower acoustic footprint so the drones themselves don’t become targets.
Cyber is the next battle. Each e-POC node runs an air-gapped Kubernetes cluster with quantum-safe keys refreshed every 24 hours; if the link drops, the drones default to a pre-mapped safe lane and loiter, transmitting nothing. Sébastien Guérémy, Thales’ vice-president for undersea warfare, calls it “silent autonomy”—a polite way of saying hackers can listen all they like; there’s nothing to hear.

From baltic frost to gulf heat
This autumn the French task force in the Gulf will stress-test PathMaster inside actual Hormuz traffic, escorting two commercial convoys while the portable cube rides on Languedoc’s helicopter deck. If the trial mirrors Baltic numbers, the system will cut clearance time from 72 to 18 hours per lane—enough to keep crude on schedule and insurance underwriters sane.
Naval officers talk about “turning sea denial into sea access”. Translation: the next time a rogue state drops a necklace of mines across the world’s oil artery, a 24-year-old lieutenant with a gamepad and a French accent can open the gate before markets have time to panic. The tankers are already queuing; the laptops are already booted. The only thing left to explode is the myth that under-water bombs still paralyse maritime trade.
